Mental health is a complicated issue surrounded by stigma which makes its coverage often problematic. Addressing mental illness will always be a fraught attempt. Most of us are more familiar with the stereotypes about mental illness than the facts, and people who live with mental illness deal with a stigma that positions them as unfixable, untrustworthy, and totally broken.

In these vox pops we ask people what they know about mental health and mental illness.

Rohan, Student

“I have an uncle suffering from a mental disorder from the past 10years, I’ve heard how hard it is for him to suffer everyday and harder for his family to see him suffer. It is not easy to cure a person suffering from mental illness and the process is quite expensive too.”

Deepak, Retired

“People with mental illness need to be pitied. There is nothing wrong if some people are born with it, it’s like a defect and they have to look after themselves and it would be great if someone afforded help to them. I don’t know anyone who has reached such stage so I can’t advice much about the topic.”

Deeksha, Law student

“Mental health is the state of well being, having stable mindset, knowing what you have to do. It’s basically not living or working on what others think. I don’t think there’s anything called mental illness because it’s just your thinking which makes you think you’re mentally ill, so thinking plays a major role in your mental health.”

Satish, Banker

“One should maintain their health, physical or mental. If this is taken care of then a person won’t suffer from mental illness.”

Murtaza, Engineer/Fitness coach

“I believe a person who is healthy physically, gets himself involved in any sport can be mentally fit too. Physical fitness teaches confidence and presenting oneself which positively affects the thinking of a person. I am a fitness coach so i talk in that perspective. A healthy body leads to a healthy mind.”

Aishwarya, Interior designer

“Music is a stress buster, i find music the only medium to cope up with workplace stress.”

Meenakshi, Entrepreneur/Housewife

“It’s firstly very important to understand mental health as we go through day-to-day stress at home and workplace. We have to figure out how to deal with stress and keep ourselves mentally healthy.”
